good idea, poorly executed: too easy for squirrels, difficult refill

I do not believe that there is anything which would be truly squirrel proof, but this one is at the lower end for sure.
The holes for the food are too big, meaning that squirrels just need to rattle the feed a little bit and the food falls out.
The holes are also not practical, as they are at the bottom and too big, thus any rain-water which has collected at the bottom
plate runs into the holes, thus ruining the food. The seeds thus germinate - something the birds aren't interested in.
I tried to circumvent this problem by only putting a little bit of food in, but that does a) not work because it just happens
to rain a lot in the UK, and b) the feeder is impractical for easy refilling as after a few weeks of use, the bottom nut and screw started turning - you would need
3 hands to do it.
Buy rather from the same company the more expensive, but way better large globe seed feeder - I've given that high marks, as its the best I have come across so far.
This one has a neat size, which is the only positive thing I can say about it. |
